While writing the 2015 CSF woman’s status board report on sharing parental leave, Lamalice conducted individual interviews with numerous parent couples from all different socioeconomic backgrounds. In each case, he noted an obvious contradiction between theory and practice when it came to parental equality. This is why he advocates for better division of parental leave.

Foreign studies and experiences tend to show that the more fathers are involved earlier in their children’s lives, the greater the positive impact on interpersonal relationships. Everyone agrees. The more present the parent, the closer he or she is to the child. It’s pretty much common knowledge. But the more time the father spends at home, the more he’ll realize what a huge job it is, the household chores as well as childcare. Because it’s easy to gloss over things when we don’t exactly know how they get done.18

When he conducted interviews with parent couples as part of his research, he asked them to describe three routines—morning, after school/work, and bedtime. Fathers tended to describe their role in detail while summing up their partners’ involvement. “They would say, ‘My girlfriend washes the dishes and does bedtime,’” he tells me.
